A single pane of glass provides very poor insulation because glass is a good conductor of heat. Therefore much of the heat in the room literally goes out the window. Install double glazing and a layer of air is trapped between the panes. Air is a poor conductor so far less heat is lost through the window.
For existing timber windows the single pane of glass is removed and replaced with a double glazed unit.
Types of Replacement Windows and Doors in Canberra

Double glazing cuts down on the cold draughts off windows and significantly improves the comfort level of a home. Another benefit of this double glazing is significant noise reduction. Double Glazing consists of two panels of glass set together with a spacer in between and sealed, trapping air inside. The air inside the unit greatly reduces the amount of hot or cold air that transfers from either side of the glass, thereby almost halving the amount of heat loss through the window. Argon gas can be introduced to give increased insulation.

If requested, an inert gas, such as argon, is used to fill the internal space between the glass panels to further improve the insulation.
The space between the glass panels is created by the inclusion of a hollow spacer bar at the perimeter. This spacer bar that is filled with a desiccant material is bonded to both glass panels.
Acting through tiny perforations the desiccant will absorb and permanently lock away any residual water vapour resulting in the only totally dry air within the sealed space between the glass panels. Trapped dry air is a very good insulator and internal condensation is not possible.

This window is a sliding window made from aluminium and glass. It is installed in the inside of an existing window in the reveal and duplicates the size and shape of the existing window.
One problem of aluminium windows is that a lot of heat is lost by conduction through the aluminium frame. This window does not suffer that problem because the inside aluminium frame is not connected to the aluminium frame of the existing window. Being glass it will last a lifetime and does not need special cleaning care as with the plastic or acrylic secondary glazing panes.
The only difference is that both sides slide. This allows the window to open for summer breezes and cleaning the fixed pane of the existing window.
